MADISON - Luella Catherine (Sedbrook) Polfer, daughter of the late Melvin Sylvester Sedbrook and Dora Mae Udelhoven, was born on July 15, 1918, in Potosi, Wis., at her family farm on Boice Creek. She attended high school in Tennyson, Wis., and earned her nursing degree at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa.

Luella married the late Francis John Polfer on June 9, 1942, at St. Andrew's Church in Tennyson, Wis. Their wedding reception was held at the farm of Luella's parents. They spent their honeymoon canoeing and fishing in Buffalo, Minn.

Luella and Francis owned and operated the Hi Acre Dairy in Center Grove, Iowa, and farmed in Bloomington, Wis., and Epworth, Iowa. They moved to Madison in 1987. Luella and Francis spent their days traveling the United States and going on walks and bike rides. Luella would go on to spend 67 years with the love of her life.

Luella loved tending her yard, going for long walks, and watching the birds. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family. One of her favorite activities was shopping for the best deals in town and she spent a fair amount of time at her favorite store, St. Vinney's. Luella lived for travel. At 96 she crossed the country by train and at 98 she was still taking road trips with her caregivers.

Luella lived a full life until the very end. She will be remembered for her incredible strength and resolve and her unfailing determination. She enjoyed life no matter the challenges. Luella's life was as beautiful as the flowers she loved so well, and her caring soul will remain in the lives of all who knew her. Luella, age 98, peacefully departed on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016, in her home surrounded by family.

Luella is survived by four children, Reginald (Nancy) Polfer of Cuba City, Wis., Ann (Eugene) Kasten of LaCrescent, Minn., Mari (Gary) Wolter of Madison, Wis., and Laurie (Steve) Thomas of Olympia, Wash.; eight grandchildren, Lisa (Ken) Kaiser, Christine (Alan) Runde, Tony (Jessica) Polfer, Tim (Kimberley) Polfer, John Silker, Ben Wolter, Michael (Catherine) Wolter and Joshua (Jennifer) Chester; 10 great-grandchildren, Wells, Alix and Riley Kaiser, Tyler, Travis and Hannah Runde, Marcella, Marissa and Addison Polfer, Paxton Polfer and one great-great-grandchild, Croix Kaiser.
