MADISON - Kathryn M. "Kate" Morrison, aged 71, passed away from breast cancer, attended by family, on June 30, 2013, at the Agrace HospiceCare Center in Fitchburg.
Kate was born May 22, 1942, in Madison, to Gould E. and Geraldine D. Morrison. She attended Lowell Grade School, Madison East High School and eventually earned an MBA from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1965.
Her adult working life was devoted to developing policies and practices that made other people's lives better. From her early service as Wisconsin's first woman state senator through later work at the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, the Division of Health for the State of Wisconsin, the New York City Health and Hospital Corp., and the national headquarters for the March of Dimes. Kate's ethic was simple: pick a problem, do something.
Kate's retirement years were spent reading, traveling and collecting folk art. She also served for a time as treasurer of the Transition Network - a network for women transitioning to post career lives.
Kate's surviving family is, of course, proud of what she accomplished, but we love her for who she was within the family. Kate was a caring, attentive and supportive daughter, sister, aunt and friend. For her family, Kate's passing is an irreplaceable loss.
Kate is survived by brothers, Phillip (wife, Pam) Morrison of Mesa, Ariz. and Paul (wife, Lynn) Morrison of Fort Collins, Colo.; long-term friend, Katharine Lyall of Madison; nephews David Morrison, Scott Morrison and Kenneth Morrison; and niece, Valorie Smith.
There will be a private family remembrance later this summer. For those who wish to convey memories or condolences, please send them to Paul Morrison, 2401 Idledale Dr., Fort Collins, CO 80526. For those inclined to send flowers (or anything with monetary value), please make a contribution to the March of Dimes or to the University of Wisconsin Alumni Association.
