VERONA - Gladys A. Hoffman, age 94 ½, died on Monday, June 5, 2017. She was the youngest of three daughters born to Peter and Alena Lukken on Oct. 16, 1922, in Mount Horeb. She graduated from East High School in 1941.
Gladys was a young bride when she married LaVerne Hoffman on Sept. 20, 1941. They lived primarily in Madison and Waunakee, and had two daughters, Janice and Sandra. They divorced in 1965. She acquired property in Monona and Verona, living quite independently until age 90, when dementia and failing joints limited her abilities. She liked to talk about her time working at Truax Field and was honored to have been a chauffeur for President Truman. Most of her working years were at Central Wisconsin Center in a variety of positions. She found other independent means to earn her "fun" money, which included selling garden produce, cleaning new buildings that LaVerne had constructed and riding her bike around town in search of aluminum. She could be very chatty with strangers. She provided many years of in-home care for her mother at her duplex in Monona. She was called Toby by friends, and after the birth of her first grandchild in Germany, she was known as Omie.
Gladys is survived by daughters, Janice (Dennis) Carberry of Verona and Sandra (Jerry) Kube of North Aurora, Ill.; three grandchildren, Anne Carberry Loppnow, Adam Kube and Dale Kube; three great-grandchildren; two nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Dorothy Foss and Ruth Melter.
Per the family's wishes, there will be no funeral. Entombment will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. A private memorial service will take place in the future. To view and sign this guestbook, please visit www.ryanfuneralservice.com.
