Compton, Gary Lynn

CLAYTON, N.C. / MADISON - Gary Lynn Compton, a former resident of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016, at Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C., surrounded by his family. He had fought a long, hard battle with cancer.

Gary was born in Bowling Green, Ky., on Nov. 25, 1945. He was a member of the Glendale Baptist Church in Bowling Green for years. Gary was a 1963 graduate of Bowling Green High School and went on to graduate from Western Kentucky University. After his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in 1972, Gary was employed by Oscar Mayer. He worked for Oscar Mayer/Kraft Foods as an Industrial Engineer focusing on Process Optimization until his retirement. After retirement, he continued to work as a consultant in the food industry until 2014.

Gary is survived by his wife of 49 years, Judy; his son, Craig (Shelly); his daughter, Kimberly Vardy (Mark); and five grandchildren, Tanner, Coltan, Brigston, Lemuel, and Pyper.

Gary was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who cherished his family, both immediate and extended, sharing a special bond with his "Penguin" brothers. He could regularly be found at his children's and grandchildren's activities, as a coach or their number one fan; working in his yard; or working at his beach house. He had a great love for his dogs.

Our hearts are sad that he has gone from us physically, but filled with joy that he is at peace with his heavenly Father. He will remain in our hearts forever.

Gary was an avid animal lover and supporter of the The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA®). In lieu of flowers, we request any donations made to this organization or another charity or shelter of your choice. To make a donation to the ASPCA, you may go to the following website:
