MADISON—Jeff, age 38, died of glioblastoma brain cancer on Saturday, June 27, 2020, surrounded by his wife and parents. He graduated from Markesan High School in 1998, participated in Rotary Youth Exchange-Bolivia in 1999, and backpacked South America with friends before attending UW-Madison. Jeff was a small business owner and former ski patroller at Cascade Mountain. He was skilled at technology, computer programming, art and documenting adventure. Jeff was known for his love for wife Julie (Rodenberg) and children Emmett and Madeline. He lived life fully with his family in New Zealand, Australia, Madison and Ireland and traveled with them to adventurous locations like Myanmar, Cuba and Portugal; developing friendships on six continents. Jeff was always up for a race, run, ski jump, or bike ride. He taught all who knew him to live adventurously.
Jeff was the son of Tom and Joan (Gottinger); big brother to Kristen (Mike) Wall and Rebecca; and is also survived by nephews, many aunts, uncles, cousins, foreign exchange family, and dear friends that will miss his pranks, tech advice and smile. He was preceded in death by grandparents, infant sister, cousin and aunt.
Mass and burial are private. A celebration of life is planned for summer 2021, after COVID. Should friends desire, memorials “In Memory of Jeff Ballweg” may be made to Foundation for Dane County Parks, 5201 Fen Oak Drive #208, Madison, WI 53718 or his children’s 529 education accounts at ugift529.com using codes W1C-N1Y and T6A-24N or via check to “Edvest College Savings Fund.” Thanks to UPMC-Presbyterian, UW Hospital B4/4 nurses, Drs. Punit and Nidhi Kumar, Markesan volunteer EMTs and many others who helped fight Jeff’s tumor.
