On July 11, WisconsinEye Senior Producer Steve Walters sat down with Common Cause in Wisconsin Executive Director Jay Heck, UW-Madison Political Science Professor David Canon, and UW-Madison Law School Assistant Professor Robert Yablon to discuss the update on cases moving through the judicial system on redistricting, and how they affect politics here in Wisconsin. Professor Canon responded to what Chief U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Roberts wrote on the recent federal redistricting ruling which stated that, "Partisan gerrymandering claims present political questions beyond the reach of the federal courts... That [one-person, one-vote] requirement does not extend to political parties it does not mean that each party must be influential in proportion to the number of its supporters... Noe of the proposed 'tests' for evaluating partisan gerrymandering claims meets the need for a limited and precise standard that is judicially discernible and manageable."
