On November 14, WisconsinEye Senior Producer Steve Walters interviewed Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Big Game Ecologist Kevin Wallenfang on the upcoming gun deer hunting season. Based on a recent Wisconsin Policy Forum report showing a 5.8 percent drop in the number of deer hunting licenses from 1999-2017, Wallenfang commented on deer hunting's popularity in Wisconsin. "The good thing about Wisconsin is that we still have...895,000 hunters in Wisconsin, about 88 percent of those deer hunt, and our trends are not dropping to the same rate as they are in other states..." Wallenfang also commented on the increasing interest in hunting from the millennial generation. "A big part of it for them is this whole idea of grow your own food, acquire your own food..."
