On October 22, the Assembly Committee on Local Government held a public hearing on Assembly Bill 527 relating to grants for suicide prevention by firearm. The bill requires the Department of Health Services to award grants to organizations or coalitions of organizations, including cities, villages, towns, and counties for providing training, education and literature on suicide prevention and providing voluntary firearm storage for at risk individuals. The Committee heard testimony from Dan Marcon, owner of Marc-On Shooting, who spoke in favor of the bill for its community education and suicide prevention focus. Marcon shared a tragic story of a previous customer who committed suicide on his shooting range due to bipolar disorder.
