On November 12, the Wisconsin State Assembly held a floor session to vote on Assembly Joint Resolution 106 relating to renaming the decorated tree on display in the Capitol Rotunda during the Christmas holiday season as the "Wisconsin State Christmas Tree." The vote followed Gov. Tony Evers request that the "holiday" evergreen have science-based decorations. Rep. Lisa Subeck (D-Madison), who is of the Jewish faith, recognized the tree as a Christmas tree and said that, "I'm not offended that it's there...I think it's a tradition, I think it's a lovely tradition," but argued that they shouldn't take this up because "when we try to officially name it, it's exclusive." Assembly Majority Leader Rep. Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna) made his argument that they agree that it's a Christmas tree but said, "the governor is playing politics with this and calling it a holiday tree..." and went further to make the example that this like renaming the Menorah to be a "holiday candelabra."
