Gov. Scott Walker says Wisconsin's economy is "on fire" thanks to tax increases passed by Illinois' most powerful Democrat in a new political advertisement to help out a fellow Republican governor's re-election bid.
In an ad paid for by Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner, Walker appears with the governors of Indiana and Missouri to thank Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan for making moves that they say prompted job growth in their states.
"We want to say – thank you," Walker says to kick off the advertisement, appearing in front of what looks like a green screen showing the interior of the Wisconsin State Capitol.
"For raising Illinois' taxes ... our economy's on fire," Walker continues. Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens adds, "We’re growing good jobs." And Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb says "we’re growing union jobs faster than Illinois."
Walker then tells Madigan: "So, we owe you."
Holcomb: "Hoosiers love you, Mike Madigan."
Walker: "Cheeseheads love you, Madigan."
Madigan, who this year became the longest-serving House Speaker in U.S. history, and his fellow House Democrats voted this year to override Rauner's veto of the state's first budget in two years and also to increase income taxes in Illinois from from 3.75 percent to 4.95 percent.
Madigan and Rauner have been fiercely at odds since Rauner first announced he was seeking the state's top office, which he won in 2014. Rauner's successful campaign was mounted, in part, on imitating Walker's tough stance against labor unions.
Both Rauner and Walker are seeking re-election in 2018.
