A 26-year-old Madison woman armed with a handgun was shot and killed early Sunday by Madison police officers, after she failed to follow commands.

Two officers fired their service weapons at the woman who was pronounced dead at the scene, Madison police said in a news release.

The incident started just after 1:20 a.m. at an apartment in the 1100 block of MacArthur Road on the city's East Side.

Police said:

A man called 911 to say he fled an apartment after his girlfriend armed herself with a handgun.

"Police contacted the woman and she displayed a handgun," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain. "The woman failed to comply with verbal commands."

The Dane County Medical Examiner's Office will release the name of the victim after family is notified.

The state Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the officer-involved shooting

"The officers involved will be placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation," DeSpain said.
