Riyad M. Alsulaiman

A Saudi Arabian man who police say has returned to his country was charged with attempted sexual assault Tuesday after he allegedly talked his way in to a neighbor's apartment in Madison last month.

The July 4 incident was one of three within five days in July in which Riyad M. Alsulaiman, 24, allegedly approached women who had cats and asked to pet them in order to get into their apartments, all in the 1600 block of Fordem Avenue.

Alsulaiman was charged with two counts of attempted third-degree sexual assault and burglary for the July 4 incident, and burglary, lewd and lascivious behavior and disorderly conduct for an incident involving a different woman on July 8. He was charged with disorderly conduct for a July 3 incident involving a third woman.

According to a criminal complaint:

On July 4, the woman told police, she was on her balcony when a man later identified as Alsulaiman asked for a light for his cigarette, then asked to come up and pet her cat. He offered repeatedly to give her a massage and wouldn't leave her apartment even after she asked him several times. The woman told police that despite her refusals, he removed her clothes and tried to have intercourse with her.

Before leaving he gave the woman his phone number, which police used later to find him.

A day earlier, another woman told police Alsulaiman made kissing gestures at her then asked her to let him into her apartment to pet her cat, but she refused.

On July 8, the third woman told police, Alsulaiman walked into a woman's apartment uninvited to pet her cat, then offered her a massage, which she refused several times. He asked to use her bathroom, she told police, and then emerged with his genitals exposed.

Alsulaiman was arrested and released from jail on July 9 but was found to have returned to Saudi Arabia when police went to look for him.

Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain said Alsulaiman had been in Madison to attend the Wisconsin English as a Second Language Institute.
