On Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese warplanes launched a surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor. The assault, which precipitated U.S. entry into World War II, resulted in 2,400 Americans killed, and 1,200 wounded. It also afflicted heavy damage to the U.S. Pacific fleet, as five of eight battleships, three destroyers, and seven other ships were sunk or severely damaged.
