Before Bancroft Dairy was called an eyesore and a blight, its cottage cheese was award-winning. It packaged billions of those little half-and-half containers for café coffee drinkers — 3 million per day, 452 individual servings per box. Cups of coffee in Atlanta were lightened by creamer made in Madison.

The plant, 1010 S. Park St., opened in the 1920s and was mothballed in 2004. Today, Bancroft's collection of warehouse additions and big, closed doors, weedy driveways and loading docks is again a target for demolition and redevelopment.
