If you’re planning to make last-minute Thanksgiving shopping trips to Schnucks or Dierbergs and wine is on your list, you’re in luck. On Wednesday, both chains offer 15 percent off purchases of six or more bottles of wine, so it’s the perfect time to stock up. Plan on getting both red and white wines to go with the variety of flavors found in a Thanksgiving feast. Look for fruity reds that have soft tannins and rich, unoaked whites. The following are two very good choices.
A to Z Wineworks 2017 Pinot Gris, Oregon
Bought • Schnucks, 6600 Clayton Road, in November for $13.99
Description • This aromatic, flavorful white comes from A to Z Wineworks, known for producing consistently good quality, value-priced wines. This pinot gris, which received 90 points from Wine Enthusiast, is a great example. Fresh and fruity, this medium-bodied white is dry but not bone dry with just a touch of sweetness. It tastes of peaches and apples with refreshing citrus notes. This is an easy-to-drink versatile wine that would go well with just about anything on the Thanksgiving table.
Kendall-Jackson 2016 Vintner’s Reserve Pinot Noir, California
Bought • Dierbergs, 8450 Eager Road, in November for $12.99
Description • This red wine, which also received 90 points from Wine Enthusiast, is exceptionally good for an inexpensive pinot noir. Elegant and well-balanced, it has much more body, flavor and complexity than you might expect at this price. It tastes of cherries, strawberries and raspberries with delicious earthy notes as well as hints of vanilla and toast from oak aging. This pinot noir is medium-bodied and smooth with soft tannins. It’s a food-friendly red that would pair with turkey, beef and salmon.
