IRON CUPCAKE 13

Jenny Sligh, of Maple Bluff, sets up her display for Iron Cupcake Madison on Sunday at Basie's Restaurant and Lounge in Madison.

The fifth challenge put forth by Iron Cupcake Madison brought bakers and cupcake consumers together on Sunday, June 26, at Basie's Restaurant on Madison's far west side, with the cooks whipping up a cornucopia of mini-cupcakes, all for the benefit of the Literacy Network.

The theme for the event was children's books, and bakers took inspiration from all sorts of children's favorites when creating their tiny tasty treasures.

Cassondra Bookstaff won best taste with apple cupcakes inspired by "The Giving Tree," while Valerie Klorman Sorenson tied for best display with her Caterpillar's Picnic cupcakes from "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" along with Andrea Thorson and Naomi Richardson's Painting the Roses Red Velvet cupcakes, inspired by "Alice in Wonderland."

Elizabeth Rotering won the Knocked My Socks Off award for her Buried in Berries cupcakes, inspired by the book "Jamberry," and her cupcakes were also the Celebrity's Choice, deemed as such by the celebrity judge.

From Dr. Seuss to the Three Little Pigs to Harry Potter, the creativity in baking was worth a thousand words, and plenty of dough for the Literacy Network.
