Downed trees and other damage caused by powerful storms that raked southern Wisconsin on Wednesday evening have shut down three popular recreation trails run by the state Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR said Military Ridge, Badger and Sugar River State trails will be closed until late Friday afternoon so crews can clean debris from the trails.

State parks in the area received minimal damage from the storms and remain open, according to a DNR news release.

The Military Ridge trail runs 40 miles in an east-west direction between Madison and Dodgeville, the Badger trail is 40 miles long in a north-south direction from Madison to the Wisconsin-Illinois border, and the Sugar River trail is 24 miles long in a northwest-southeast direction between New Glarus and Brodhead.
