Dear Editor: Thank you to Heidi Wegleitner, County Board supervisor, for working to make the life of a breastfeeding mother a little easier by authoring the resolution to require all county buildings to accommodate breastfeeding mothers.
As a reminder, Wisconsin state law confirms a woman’s right to breastfeed her baby anywhere she may be that the public is allowed. However, some women welcome the opportunity to breastfeed in a quiet private space for a variety of reasons. Primarily though, this initiative is responding to the needs of breastfeeding mothers who are out and about without their babies and have a regular or occasional need for a private space to pump their milk. These women could be police officers, postal workers, UPS drivers, cab drivers and others whose work is not in one location. It could also be women who need to be away from their babies on extended errands or have a meeting in the community.
The Breastfeeding Coalition of South Central Wisconsin has a list of locations throughout the area shown on a google map where women can pump their milk if needed. Check out www.bcscw.org/InfoandResources/PumpingFriendlySites.aspx.
If anyone knows of other spaces that are open to accommodating women in need of a private place to pump, please let us know and we will add it to the map!
