No two characters have captured America's love for sandwiches more perfectly than Liz Lemon and Dagwood Bumstead.

Bumstead, a character in the "Blondie" comic strip, was often portrayed eating gigantic, multi-layered creations towering between pieces of bread.

And Lemon, the character portrayed by Tina Fey on "30 Rock," once posited this theory: "Can I share with you my worldview? All of humankind has one thing in common: the sandwich. I believe that all anyone really wants in this life is to sit in peace and eat a sandwich."

Assuming that her worldview is correct, we'd like to make it easier for Madisonians to do just that. So whether they're serving up Dagwood-sized monstrosities, Liz Lemon's beloved Italian subs or another variety, we're rounding up Madison's best sandwiches. And we need your help.

We'll assemble a list of the city's best sandwiches based on your suggestions. From there, we'll ask you to vote in a poll to determine the winner.

Is it the banh mi (or meatless) at Mermaid Cafe? A croque monsieur from Brasserie V? Maybe a torta from Habanero's is more your style, or perhaps you prefer the Cuban sandwich served up at the Great Dane. Do you stand in line for the vegan BLT at the Ladonia Cafe food cart, or would you rather get cozy with a honey, fig and goat cheese sandwich at Indie Coffee?

What's the best thing on sliced bread around here — and where can you get it? Let us know in the comments.
