Ron Johnson plans to support Betsy DeVos, is not 'on the fence'

The internet is full of lies.

Chief among them are lies about politics, whether they be half-truths, spin or propaganda. And if you're following the Senate confirmation process for President Donald Trump's nominee for education secretary, you've probably encountered a few of them.

Here's one: Posts are making the rounds on Facebook and Twitter urging people to call Sen. Ron Johnson, who is reportedly "on the fence" on whether he will vote to confirm DeVos.

One such tweet from the account @ActualEPAFacts was retweeted nearly 1,000 times on Monday.

So, is he undecided?

"Sen. Johnson is planning to support Ms. DeVos," said Johnson spokesman Ben Voelkel in an email.

That's not to say voters shouldn't call the Wisconsin Republican, whether they agree or disagree with that position. But now they know where he stands.

Do a quick search for other Republican senators' names along with "DeVos" and "on the fence," and you'll find similar results. Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania? "On the fence," despite having said he is "pleased" to vote for her confirmation. Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa? "On the fence," despite having voiced her support.

DeVos does face opposition from all 48 Senate Democrats, along with Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine. One more Republican "no" would sink her nomination.

DeVos, a Michigan billionaire, has been a major backer of charter schools and taxpayer-funded voucher schools in her home state and throughout the country. Her family has donated about $49,000 to Johnson, who also backs vouchers.
