A video starring Madison-based YouTube star Chad Vader explaining Wisconsin's voter ID law won a contest for best municipal public service announcement, beating out four other cities.
The news was announced Friday on a live recording of GovLov, a podcast from Engaging Local Government Leaders. ELGL is an organization with the mission of connecting, communicating and educating people about important topics in local government.
Madison's video received 477 out of the 883 votes cast.
Dane County Clerk Scott McDonell, who wrote the PSA script, was featured on the podcast along with the creator of the character Ron Pitchman, who appears in another contest video.
In the video highlighted by ELGL, Chad, who is played by Aaron Yonda and voiced by Matt Sloan, goes to the polls and learns that nobody is exempt from the law before he heads to the Department of Motor Vehicles to get an ID.
Chad Vader, a grocery store managing Sith lord, is the star of a popular local web series created by Blame Society Productions. All four seasons of the Star Wars parody fan series can be found on its YouTube channel.
"Once you do something and you break the ice, and there’s no penalty and people like it, then it lets the creative juices flow around here," McDonell said on the podcast.
