Hanah Jon Taylor’s vision to establish a permanent home for Jazz in Madison is now a reality! Madison jazz fans and players will be pleased to find the jazz saxophonist, music educator and impresario, is opening Cafe CODA, our city’s premiere space for world class jazz and creative music!
Café CODA prides itself as a true listening space dedicated to the presentation of traditional, contemporary, and creative music. In its initiative as an arts-centric community hub, Café CODA will also present workshops and master classes as well as musical viewing and weekly listening experiences. In its broader vision, Café CODA seeks to be a strategic Midwest venue attracting listeners, patrons and artists from all parts of the world, while still maintaining a personal, community feel. CODA will be a high end listening room which also carries fine wine and spirits. It will be an inclusive space, welcoming to everyone.
The Grand Opening, Saturday September 8th, begins at noon with a community drum circle, followed by an afternoon open house. The evening performance features world-renowned Chicago/Detroit-based jazz pianist and bandleader Alexis Lombre and Trio. (pron: Lom-bray) https://alexislombre.com. Live music performances will be scheduled Wednesdays through Saturdays with the weekly schedule as follows-
Wednesday- Night of the Improviser (7:30PM)
Saxophone/Flutist Hanah Jon Taylor and Bassist John Christiansen co-host this evening of spontaneous compositions and bright sonic moments. Each week musicians will be invited to ‘session’ with iconic featured guests. No Fake Books please.
Thursday- World Music Dance (7:30 PM)
Each Thursday evening, CODA will present dance music from around the world, featuring cultural artists and bands, performing live and inviting all to move to the world rhythms of many lands.
Friday- Mid-America Showcase (7:30 and 9:30 PM)
CODA takes great pride in presenting the performances of the most inspired artists of this area. As a ‘hub’ of Chicago, Milwaukee and Minneapolis, CODA showcases the works of the best regional Jazz combos and ensembles.
Peoples Drum Circle (Noon) - ALL AGES
Come and take part in this weekly ritual of sound, vibrations and human comradery. All ages and levels of drumming are welcome. Bring your own drum or play one of CODA’s limited number of Djembes.
Youth Jazz Expo (2:00 PM) - ALL AGES
Young players from the Madison area are encouraged to meet and session with others aspiring to learn and experience the art of Jazz. Each week a rotating cadre of professionals stop in to engage with participants on all instruments and varied styles.
The Big Show (7:30 and 9:30 PM)
CODA offers the best in Jazz performances of musicians from around the world. The works of world-class composers, instrumentalists and singers are scheduled for Saturday matinee and evening shows. Reserved seating is available.
Sunday- Bring your own Vinyl (2:00 PM)
As a weekend treat, CODA invites participants to share their favorite recorded music with other community Jazz music-lovers, hosted by various radio personalities and friends. Sundays will also occasionally include Poetry and other art events.
