Paid Paid Advertisement Advertisement ‘One Nation, Under God’? January 6 was a ‘faith-based initiative.’ Three months ago, the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol showed what “One Nation, Under God” looks like. Many insurrectionists believed they were answering a call to protect “God’s anointed.” Crosses and bibles, banners saying “In God We Trust,” “Jesus 2020” and “Jesus Saves” mingled with racist symbols. Christian prayers were delivered at the rally, en route to the Capitol and inside the Senate chamber, which was invaded “in Christ’s holy name.” Christian nationalism, often allied with white supremacy, conflates being Christian with being a true American. It seeks to replace democratic principles with what it claims is “God’s word.” This political identity movement, embraced by a number of public officials who insist “America is a Christian nation,” poses a continuing threat to civil liberties and our secular republic. Freedom depends on freethinkers. Join FFRF in our essential work so that reason and our secular Constitution will prevail.
