The big question
How will the Brett Favre drama end?
And just as importantly, how will it affect Rodgers? Favre's public ruminations about coming back to the NFL for an 18th season after announcing he was hanging 'em up at a tearful March 6 news conference have the potential to be the mother of all distractions to the Packers and to Rodgers, whose unenviable task of following a legend was tough enough before. It's still theoretically possible Favre could end up on the Packers' roster, even though he said he wouldn't apply for reinstatement and report to camp just to "stick it to 'em." What fun that would be.
Player to watch
Rodgers.
You could argue that no player in the league will be watched more closely than the Packers' 2005 first-round pick (No. 24 overall), who has spent three years waiting for this opportunity. And as messy as the transition has become, he is eager for his shot. The biggest question mark is his durability — his 2006 season ended with a broken foot against New England (despite playing the entire second half of the game on it), and his impressive fill-in work for Favre against Dallas was followed by a torn hamstring suffered in practice a few days later.
Key competition
Backup quarterback.
While Brohm is the presumptive backup, having been drafted in the second round — as opposed to Flynn, a seventh-rounder — there wasn't a colossal separation between the two by the end of offseason practices. Brohm was heralded as the most NFL-ready quarterback in April's draft, while Flynn was a one-year starter at LSU after backing up 2007 No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell for much of his career in Baton Rouge. Training camp and the exhibition season will solidify the pecking order, but don't expect the team to add a veteran arm even if the young guys struggle early.
