The Dane County Coroner on Thursday night confirmed that the body pulled from Lake Monona Thursday morning is that of a swimmer who disappeared in the lake more than a week ago.
The coroner's office identified the deceased man as Erik J. Jensen, 40, of Madison, who was reported missing Aug. 17 after he went swimming off a boat near Law Park.
Preliminary autopsy findings indicate Jensen's death did not involve trauma, according to the coroner's office, but a fuller explanation is pending the results of further "microscopic and toxicological studies."
The Dane County Sheriff's Office said earlier Thursday that autopsy results showed the cause of death was consistent with drowning.
The body was found along the lake's north shore around 7:30 a.m. It was recovered along a steep embankment in the Spaight Street residential neighborhood on Madison's Near East Side, close to B.B. Clarke beach.
"It was actually discovered by our boat patrol that has been doing daily sweeps," said Lt. Steve Gilmore. The Sheriff's Office Marine and Trail Enforcement unit has been doing daily sweeps of the lake every morning and evening since Jensen was reported missing Aug. 17, Gilmore said.
Authorities said Jensen was on a boat with three others near Law Park when he decided to go for a swim and never returned.
