Mueller: Roll out red carpet for Buckeye fans
By Jill Mueller

As a student in my final year at UW-Madison, I am proud of our campus and all that it represents.

The 2008 football season has been a wonderful opportunity for me to show my pride by helping Wisconsin and visiting team fans enjoy their game-day experience at Camp Randall Stadium. I have been able to do this because I am the coordinator of the university's Rolling Out the Red Carpet program.

Rolling Out the Red Carpet is UW-Madison's sportsmanship campaign, and this football season marks our fifth anniversary. One component consists of 25 fan ambassadors who greet and welcome fans outside the stadium and help "roll out the red carpet" every football game day.

The student-created initiative also includes outreach to local businesses and educating students on positive game-day traditions.

Saturday's game also marks the first time Ohio State has been to Camp Randall since 2003, which was the contest that led to the creation of this campaign. Our fan ambassadors will make a real effort -- and I hope Wisconsin fans do so as well -- to welcome back visiting Buckeye fans.

We want all fans attending this outstanding Big Ten matchup to have a memorable and enjoyable experience.

This past July, I attended a Big Ten Sportsmanship Conference in Columbus, Ohio, that was sponsored by Ohio State and attended by nine of the 11 Big Ten schools. It was a great opportunity to learn, work together and realize there is much we share in common.

Ohio State's own Sportsmanship Council, along with Wisconsin administrators, athletic department staff and students, have taken the lead in making fan behavior a real priority at our schools, as well as across the Big Ten. I will also be sending five fan ambassadors to Ohio State's "Buckeye Bash" to mingle with Ohio State fans during their pregame tailgate festivities, which is a first for the fan ambassador program.

Alongside the Fan Ambassadors are 30 UW-Madison Athletic Department guest services staff who assist fans with ticket pickups, provide golf cart rides to fans needing special accessibility assistance and help with a variety of other needs around Camp Randall. Wearing bright yellow vests, they are a vital part of making sure game-day operations run smoothly for all fans.

On Saturday, please help all of us greet Ohio State fans as respected rivals, not hated enemies.

We expect Saturday to be one of the best college football games this season. But more importantly, we appreciate the partnership we have developed with Ohio State and hope Wisconsin and Ohio State fans can honor two of the best college football teams in the country by respecting each other and making good sportsmanship a priority.

So if you see anyone in scarlet and gray on Saturday, a simple "Welcome to Camp Randall. Enjoy the game!" would be a great way to celebrate this game and the fifth anniversary of Wisconsin's Rolling Out the Red Carpet.

Mueller is a senior majoring in English and Spanish at the UW-Madison.
