Teaching people how to prepare and enjoy tea is my dream career. Drinking tea gives people permission to slow down and take five minutes for themselves. I like the business of tea as I've always enjoyed the product and could only sell what I believe in. My business model is unique as I don't have a store. I come to people's homes and businesses to share my knowledge and products.
There are three components to my business. Tea with Maleah features a tea party in your home, which is a tea store brought to your door. It's perfect for book clubs or other groups where you and 10 of your friends can sample teas and learn how to prepare tea. Since tea is 90 percent water, the better the water, the better tea. Temperature plays an important role in tea drinking as you don't want the water to be too hot. It's important to not to overheat or boil the water.
The second component of my business is Tea Solutions. I visit cafes, restaurants and retail stores to custom-craft a tea menu using Cha Cha Teas and to teach the staff about my products. By offering a quality tea product, customers stay longer and have a memorable experience.
The third component is the Tea Emporium, my online and in-person tea store, which offers organic fair-trade teas from Japan, China, Africa and India, along with tea pots, tea cups, cookies made with tea, books about tea, music and other tea-related items.
I launched Cha Cha Tea in April in conjunction with the premiere of the film "The Meaning of Tea" at the Wisconsin Film Festival. The film explores the romance and complexities surrounding tea. My job as owner of Cha Cha Tea is to help people discover teas from around the world.
Tea is a generational drink that kids can share with their parents as well as grandparents. I've given a tea tasting at my son Ben's pre-school and kids love to touch, feel, smell and taste tea, and learn about the multi-cultural heritage of tea.
What I Do invites people to tell in their own words what they do to make a living. The column runs every Tuesday. To suggest someone to feature, contact Jill Carlson at jillcarlson1957@gmail.com.
