Bill Cooney
Bill Cooney has covered golf for the Wisconsin State Journal since 2004, including several U.S. Bank Championships, a pair of PGA Championships and a U.S. Senior Open as well as many state and local events. The Appleton native grew up playing Reid Municipal Golf Course -- and still considers its 17th and 18th as some of the state's top finishing holes -- and, when he has the day off, counts on the middle tees, at least one mulligan and an occasional gimme-putt to break 80 at a handful of area golf courses.

The Shag Bag: UW's Woltman off to hot start at U.S. Amateur

Dan Woltman is right in the mix at the 108th U.S. Amateur Championship.

The University of Wisconsin senior-to-be from Beaver Dam shot a first-round, 1-under-par 69 at the No. 2 course at Pinehurst (N.C.).

A cut will be made after Tuesday's second round, in order to get the top 64 players for match play. By the end of today, Woltman's score should be in the top 15.

UW senior-to-be and former Middleton athlete Dan Zimmerman shot a 74 while Racine's Ben Bendtsen III, the reigning Wisconsin State Amateur champ, carded a 77. Both will have some work to do in order to make the 36-hole cut.
