UW volleyball: Balanced attack pushes winning streak to four
Audra Jeffers had eight kills to lead six players in double figures as the No. 21 University of Wisconsin volleyball team claimed its fourth straight victory Saturday, sweeping Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich.
Allison Wack, Ellie Ohlander, Morgan Salow and Katherine Dykstra all posted seven kills and Brittney Dolgner came off the bench in the second set to record five as the Badgers (14-4, 4-2 Big Ten) handled the Spartans 25-21, 26-24, 25-21.
Kim Kuzma added 15 digs for Wisconsin, which handed Michigan State (11-6, 3-3) its first home loss of the season in eight tries.
The first set was tied 5-5 when the Badgers asserted themselves, scoring six of the next seven points, with Ohlander recording an ace to lead the rally.
Michigan State pulled within 14-13, taking advantage of three straight kills, but Wisconsin regrouped and took an 18-14 lead when Ohlander added a block solo. Dykstra finished off the set with a kill after Michigan State staved off two set points.
The second set was tied 10 times, including at 17-17. The Spartans took a 20-18 lead before a Michigan State service error and block from Jeffers and Wack knotted the set at 20.
The score was tied at 21 and 22 before a Badger block and a kill from Dykstra gave the UW its first set
point. The Spartans tied the score at 24 off a Wisconsin hitting error but kills from Dolgner and a Spartan hitting error gave the Badgers the set and a 2-0 lead.
Wisconsin came out strong in the third set, leading 14-10 before Michigan State rallied to forge a 21-21 tie on a kill from Becca Zlabis.
Kills from Dolgner and Ohlander put UW up 23-21 before the duo combined on a block for match point, when Spartans setter Natalie Emro was called for a ball-handling error.
The Badgers continue their four-match road trip, playing at No. 18 Purdue on Friday and at No. 19 Illinois on Oct. 19.
