The 12-year-old boy found dead from a gunshot wound inflicted by his father has been identified as Kyle Dutter, 12, of Middleton, according to a release this evening from the Dane County Coroner's Office.

Dutter's father, who was found along with his son in a black sport utility vehicle parked next to Haen Family Park on the west side this morning, shot and killed his son and turned the gun on himself in an unsuccessful suicide attempt. The father remains hospitalized.

Dutter was a sixth-grader at Glacier Creek Middle School in Cross Plains, confirmed Principal Tim Keeler, who called Dutter's death a shock.

Police were alerted to the situation by an anonymous call made to the Dane County 911 center shortly after 9 a.m. Based on what the caller said, officers determined they needed to check on the welfare of an individual who was said to be inside a black SUV parked near Haen Family Park. The park is located on the corner of Tree Lane and High Point Road on Madison's west side, a block north of Mineral Point Road, several blocks east of the Beltline.
