Gas prices have now dropped to an average of $2 a gallon in Madison, with some stations selling regular unleaded for as low as $1.94 a gallon in the metro area.
AAA's daily fuel gauge report shows Madison and Green Bay with the second-lowest average price for regular unleaded in the state, eclipsed only by Milwaukee where the average price is $1.987 a gallon.
The low-price range for regular unleaded is $1.94-$1.97 a gallon while the high-price range is $2.05-$2.09 a gallon, according to madisongasprices.com.
The statewide average has dropped to $2.03 a gallon for regular unleaded, down 2.3 cents from Tuesday and more than half below the record $4.114 a gallon on July 17, meaning the price has dropped $2.08 a gallon in four months.
Nationally, regular unleaded has dropped to an average $2.047 a gallon, down 2.1 cents from Tuesday.
Twenty-one states are selling the fuel for an average less than $2 a gallon, while another 14 states have regular unleaded selling for an average between $2 and $2.10 a gallon.
Outside of Alaska, which still has the most expensive gas in the country at $3.15 a gallon, no other state is selling gas above $3 a gallon. Hawaii had been the other state above the $3 mark, but is now selling regular unleaded at an average of $2.98 a gallon.
Kansas City, Mo., still is the low-price leader in the United States. Regular unleaded is selling there for an average of $1.64 a gallon.
For Midwest travelers, Ohio has the lowest average price for regular unleaded at $1.841 a gallon with Columbus the lowest metro area in the state at an average at $1.772 a gallon.
Indiana has the fuel selling for an average $1.874 a gallon with Terre Haute the lowest metro area at $1.832, Minnesota has an average price of $1.895 with Minneapolis-St. Paul the lowest at $1.838, Michigan has an average price of $1.920 with Saginaw the lowest at $1.825, Iowa has an average price of $1.933 with Des Moines the lowest at $1.816, and Illinois has an average price of $2.076 with Champaign-Urbana the lowest at $1.803.
The Illinois average is still above $2 a gallon thanks to Chicago, where the average price of regular unleaded is $2.20 a gallon.
