Public meeting on hunger set

The Capital Times  —  10/06/2008 12:31 pm

With one in 10 Wisconsin households not having enough food, the Dane County Food Council will get together with the public Oct. 27 at Second Harvest food bank to try to address the hunger issue head-on locally.

The public meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. at the food bank, 2802 Dairy Drive, Madison. It is a follow-up to a meeting in Richland Center on "setting the table for action" to combat hunger in Wisconsin.

"With growing economic uncertainty and rising fuel and food costs, now more than ever we want people in Dane County to understand the enormous need in our community that people receive an adequate supply of healthy, nutritious food," said food council member Jane Voichick, retired professor from the UW-Madison Department of Nutritional Sciences.

The discussion will include the four "table legs" of food security: family economic security, access to affordable and healthy food, federal nutrition programs and emergency food assistance.

People interested in attending the Oct. 27 meeting should contact Ruth Simpson at rsimpson@terracom.net by Oct. 22.
