A 22-year-old Valders man was beaten and robbed early Sunday morning by a group of between six and 10 black males and females at University Avenue and Bassett Street.
Madison police said the attack happened about 2 a.m. Sunday.
A woman called 911 after witnessing the man being attacked.
"Police found a very intoxicated man who said he was just robbed of his cell phone and wallet," police spokesman Joel DeSpain said. "He continuously used the 'n' word as the only way to describe his attackers."
The victim said two black males initially approached him and they tripped him and knocked him down before taking his belongings.
The victim was taken to the detox center.
